Where Did I Come From?

by Dr. Mary Ann Diorio

At some point in each of our lives, most of us ask ourselves three very important questions: Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going?

If you haven’t asked yourself these questions yet, you probably will. The answers you give to them will determine not only the destiny of your life here on earth, but also and most importantly, the destiny of your life after you die.

Let’s take a look at the first question: Where did I come from? The answer to this question can be found in the Bible, God’s manual for man: “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). According to this verse, you were created by God and fashioned in His image. In other words, you came from the very hand and heart of God. That fact gives you tremendous worth!

In the Book of Psalms, King David proclaims that he is “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139: 14). What does this mean? The definition of the word “fearfully” as used in the original Hebrew text of this verse means “in an astonishing and awesome manner.”

Like King David, you too were “fearfully and wonderfully made.” In other words, you were created by God in an astonishing and awesome way. In the same Psalm, David says to God, “For you created my inmost being: you knit me together in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139: 13).

Since God created you, you are very special to Him. Although I may not have had the honor and privilege of meeting you, there is one thing I know about you for sure. You are a very precious person in God’s eyes. When God made you, He threw away the mold. That means that there is no one in the entire world just like you—nor has there ever been, nor will there ever be. Just think! No one else has your smile, your fingerprints, your voice. They are yours and yours alone. You are an original masterpiece, not a copy.

Moreover, since God made you, He knows everything about you. He knows how you tick. Again, David says to God, “You are familiar with all my ways” (Psalm 139: 3).

Since God made you, He alone can fix you when you’re broken. Doesn’t it make sense, then, to go to Him with every problem, heartache, and concern? If you do, you’ll find, as I did, that He is waiting with open arms to help you. +++
