Where Am I Going?

by Dr. Mary Ann Diorio

Imagine playing basketball without a hoop. How would you know where to shoot the ball? Or imagine a golf course without holes. How would you know in what direction to hit the ball? You would find it impossible to play basketball or to golf without knowing where your target is.

The same is true of life. Unless you know where you’re going, you won’t know how to win at the game of life. Most people play the game of life without hoops and holes. They wander aimlessly, without any sense of direction or purpose. Perhaps you’re one of them. If so, read on.

In two earlier articles, we explored together where you came from and why you’re here. Today we’ll talk about where you’re going.

Bottom line, there are only two roads to choose from in life: God’s road or Satan’s road. We could call these two roads the high road and the low road.

Now a lot of people today don’t believe in Satan. Or else they think he’s a harmless cartoon character who wears red tights and carries a pitchfork. The truth is that Satan is real. In fact, he is the source of all evil in the world.

Referring to him as a thief, the Apostle John says that Satan “does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10). On the other hand, John says that Jesus Christ came so that we could have life and have it to the full (John 10:10).

Unless we consciously choose to follow God’s road, we will follow Satan’s road by default. That’s just the way human nature is. The Bible, God’s manual for man, describes it like this: ”...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” (Romans 3:23).

Left to himself, without any moral restraints, man will automatically gravitate toward evil. Just look at children. Unless they are disciplined, they will not do the right thing naturally. They will do the self-centered thing.

The two roads of life—God’s road and Satan’s road—lead to radically different destinations. God’s road leads to life; Satan’s road leads to death. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”(Romans 6:23).

Which road we take is entirely up to us because God created us with a free will. If we choose to take God’s road, we will experience His blessings not only in this life, but we will also live with Him forever in Heaven after we die. If we choose to take Satan’s road, we will experience his curses in this life and, unless we repent and turn to God, we will spend eternity with Satan in Hell. It’s that simple.

In the Book of Deuteronomy, chapter 30, God says, “This day . . . I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life . . . ” Well, how do you choose life? You choose life by accepting Life Himself, Jesus Christ. He said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

So don’t wonder any longer about where you’re going. Choose life today by choosing Jesus Christ. Then you’ll be a winner for sure! +++
